Cavaco Silva praises Theodora Cardoso’s competence and “remarkable independence”

The former President of the Republic and economist Anibal Cavaco Silva this Sunday praised the competence and “remarkable independence” of the economist Teodora Cardoso, as she did not succumb to “attacks and attempts at interference by the political authorities.”

In a message sent to the Lusa agency in which he “sadly” expresses his “sincere condolences” to the family of Teodora Cardoso, who died on Saturday at the age of 81, Cavaco Silva states that the economist “has made a decisive contribution to the consolidation and authority of the Council of Public Finance”, over which he presided, demonstrating “competence and marked independence, without succumbing to attacks and attempts at interference from the political authorities.”

The former head of state and former prime minister also emphasizes that Teodora Cardoso “was one of the most qualified people” in matters of “monetary theory and policy and their practical application”, areas whose “cooperation and competence” the Economist magazine claims brought benefited a lot when he was director of the department of statistics and economic research at Banco de Portugal.

Economist and first president of the Public Finance Council Theodora Cardoso died on Saturday in Lisbon at the age of 81, a source at Banco de Portugal told Lusa.

Teodora Cardoso was born in Estremoz and graduated in economics from the Higher Institute of Economics and spent most of her career at Banco de Portugal.
