The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and other international organizations this Sunday pledged to provide urgent financial resources to help Morocco cope with the consequences of Friday’s earthquake.
“Together with all our international partners, we stand with Morocco to provide all necessary support for any immediate short-term financial needs and recovery efforts,” the joint statement said.
“We will mobilize our technical and financial instruments and our assistance in a coordinated manner to help the Moroccan people overcome this terrible tragedy,” they added.
A joint statement was published following the G20 summit in New Delhi.
The document was signed by IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva and the Presidents of the World Bank Ajay Banga, the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the African Union Azali Assoumani.
The document was also signed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose country has previously chaired the G20, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
A powerful earthquake hit Morocco on Friday evening, killing more than 2,000 people, injuring thousands more and destroying several places, including parts of the tourist city of Marrakech.
In the declaration, the institutions expressed their “full solidarity with the authorities and people of Morocco,” as well as their desire to support the country of 37 million people.
“We have been and remain committed partners to Morocco, supporting the authorities in building an inclusive and sustainable economy with strong institutions. This strength will serve the Moroccan people well as they recover from the devastating earthquake,” they added.
