Costa in Chile remembers April 25 and states that dictatorships always come to an end.

This Monday, the Prime Minister recalled April 25 in Portugal at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of General Augusto Pinochet’s coup that overthrew Chilean democracy and said that dictatorships always come to an end.

Antonio Costa took these positions upon his arrival at La Moneda Palace, the headquarters of the Chilean government, where ceremonies are being held to mark the 50th anniversary of the military coup that ended Chile’s democratic regime on September 11, 1973.

“It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation of Chilean President Gabriel Borich to attend these ceremonies. Today is a very important day – a day to remember that democracy is achieved every day and that every day we must strengthen democracy to keep it alive,” the Prime Minister said in a brief message in Spanish.

António Costa believes that today “is the day to remember that if democracy is never achieved, dictatorships will always end.”

“They may last longer, they may last less, but dictatorships are never the solution to a problem and therefore they always have an end,” he said, before mentioning the case of Portugal on April 25, 1974, and the end of the Estado Novo regime. .

“This year, as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile, in a few months we will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, which ended 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal and opened the country to development, European integration, peace and relations with all countries of the world in very intensive multilateral cooperation,” he said.

The Prime Minister then mentioned Salvador Allende, Chile’s democratically elected socialist president, who committed suicide on the day of the military coup before being captured by General Pinochet’s troops at La Moneda Palace.

“The spirit of Salvador Allende will always be a guide for all who love freedom and democracy. This is the most important message we have to convey today. Democracy always needs those who defend it, those who promote it. It protects itself, democracy, only with the help of more democracy,” he added.
