The Porto Chamber wants the government to take action to help stop the musicians

The chief executive of the Porto City Council approved by a majority vote this Monday the request that the government take all necessary measures so that the more than 500 musicians in the Stop Ali shopping center can continue to develop their activities.

The proposal presented by the CDU aimed to reverse the decision to close the shopping center and also to require the government to take the necessary measures to ensure that musicians continue to develop their activities in the Stop, complemented by the Pires de Lima school.

Only the second point of the recommendation was approved: Rui Moreira and BU voted for the independent movement, the PSD abstained, and the PS voted against.

At the meeting, CDU councilor Ilda Figueiredo said that “the government should not remain aloof” from what is happening in the Stop, adding that the party has already asked the Assembly of the Republic to hear the various organizations involved.

“Our goal is for Stop to continue to serve as an example of musicians who knew how to revitalize a space that would be abandoned today,” he said.

In response to the adviser, the mayor, independent Rui Moreira, said he had already informed the culture minister of the situation and had also spoken to the economy minister and the secretary of state about “the possibility of resolving the purchasing problems.” first generation centers.”

“I proposed a method of classification [dos edifícios]inventory and investment,” he said, saying that if the equipment were classified, municipalities could invest in it and get reimbursed for the rent.

Rui Moreira also said that “some cooperation” from the government is needed, “not in material terms, but in legislative terms.”

“Stop is the visible face of a problem that coexists in several Portuguese cities,” he added.

As for PS, Councilor Rosario Gamboa said she was concerned about the situation of the musicians, but this could not be dismissed given the unsafe situation in the building.

Regarding the CDU proposal, the socialist stressed that, like local authorities, the Ministry of Culture “cannot interfere in other people’s homes.”

While defending that the government, through the Ministry of Internal Administration, could take more consistent measures to solve the Stop problem, Social Democratic councilor Alberto Machado, however, believes that the guardianship “cannot do what some people want.” the camera does and cannot.”

BE councilor Sergio Aires stressed that the Stop problem is “not solved in the short term”, despite the solution proposed by the municipality to use the Pires de Lima school.

“What efforts are we making to accommodate a significant part of the musicians? It is necessary to convene the Municipal Council of Culture to distribute various events, because it is clear that this issue will not be resolved in the next four months,” he said. .

The Stop, which has operated as a cultural space with rehearsal rooms and studios for more than 20 years, closed most of its sections on July 18, leaving nearly 500 artists and shop owners with nowhere to go, but reopened on July 4. , with a fire truck at the door.

After receiving the report of the extraordinary inspection carried out by the National Directorate of Civil Protection (ANEPC), Porto City Council services defended the closure of the shopping center and the attempt to take precautionary measures against ANEPC and the Ministry of Internal Administration.

On Friday, the owners and tenants of the Stop were notified by municipal services that they had 10 working days to vacate the building, more precisely until September 22, the day when a new demonstration had already been scheduled for Avenida dos Aliados protest against the decision of the chamber. solution.
