Mozambique Spokesperson Says African Union’s G20 Membership Will ‘Transform’ Africa

The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, said on Tuesday that the African Union’s (AU) entry into the G20 would be “transformative” for the continent, which is “at the forefront of addressing global challenges.”

“Mozambique very much welcomes the decision to accept the AU as a full member of the G20. Africa is at the forefront of addressing global challenges, including those related to climate change, food security and reforms of international financial institutions,” Filipe Nyusi wrote in a message on his official account on the social network Facebook.

According to the head of state, “it is very important that Africa has a full voice in decision-making on global issues.”

“With the second youngest population, the continent is set to outperform the rest of the world in terms of economic growth over the next two years in terms of gross domestic product,” he further wrote.

On Saturday, at a meeting in New Delhi (India), the G20 decided to include the AU as a permanent member of the bloc, which unites the 19 largest economies of the world and the European Union.

“I am confident that the AU’s participation will be transformative in terms of the impact of the G20 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Filipe Nyusi.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, he added: “Mozambique is determined to contribute to the search for African solutions to African problems at the national, continental and international levels.”
