Chega on Tuesday praised some of the SDP’s tax-cut initiatives but felt they had “essentially failed”, challenging the Social Democrats to take a position on proposals such as an emergency contribution to banking or cutting fuel taxes.
Andre Ventura spoke to reporters at the Assembly of the Republic about an hour after the PSD presented at a press conference the five tax-cutting initiatives that party president Luis Montenegro announced in mid-August and will be submitted to parliamentary debate. September 20 – four bills and a draft resolution.
The Chegi leader began by saying that he would not interfere with the initiatives of the Social Democrats (voting for some and abstaining from others), believing that some “are positive in nature,” but understands that the package “fails on its merits.” , especially in the housing sector.
Ventura said the party will bring to the debate on the 20th a Chega proposal that seeks “an extraordinary contribution to banking so that this contribution can be used to pay off part of the housing loan faced by families”, calling on the PSD to “say yes or no “.
“It is unacceptable to us that when the banks were in trouble we invested hundreds of millions of euros in them, and now that the banks are making profits they cannot be used to pay off the mortgages of hundreds of thousands of families. This is not a question of left or right, it is a question of common sense and I call on the SDP to say whether it will vote for our proposal or not,” he challenged.
According to President Chegi, “the SDP reform will fail also because it does not address the issue of fuel,” adding that he also wants to put forward a proposal to reduce fuel taxes for discussion on the 20th.
On August 18, Chega introduced a bill for emergency bank profits to finance housing support programs through a “temporary solidarity contribution,” arguing that it was an “effective and fair” measure.
