Von der Leyen opens doors to new EU countries

Focused on the future but not announcing a re-candidacy, Ursula von der Leyen spoke Wednesday for the last time in her term as European Commission president.

In Strasbourg, France, he opened the door to the expansion of the European Union to include eastern countries such as Georgia, Moldova and mainly Ukraine, stressing that it had taken “big steps” to be able to join the Union, but “Accession is based on merit.”

Guaranteeing to be “on the side of Ukraine,” he announced the extension of asylum to Ukrainian citizens. The Commission leader called high inflation a “serious economic problem” and acknowledged that “it will take some time” to reach the 2% target set by the European Central Bank to stabilize prices.

Ursula has defended the Green Deal on the ecological transition and used the fires and floods in Europe this summer to highlight that the “Planet is boiling” and also announced an investigation into electric car subsidies coming from China.
