Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Tuesday praised speeches by Brazilian President Lula da Silva and North American President Joe Biden at the United Nations, in which he identified “an overlap that allows for dialogue.”
Speaking to reporters at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that he had the opportunity to speak with the President of Ukraine on Tuesday and that Volodymyr Zelensky was “very happy” about the prospect of meeting with Lula da Silva in Wednesday.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who this Tuesday was the eighth head of state to speak at the opening of the general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the session with the words: “big intervention”, in which he spoke about the problems and priorities “very direct and very pedagogical.”
“Then there were two great speeches,” he says, referring to the speeches of the presidents of Brazil and the United States of America.
The President of the Republic described Lula da Silva’s speech as “very well written and very balanced” and “open to dialogue, also in the case of Ukraine”, and Joe Biden’s speech as “an example of diplomatic skill” in which “naturally there was a very resolutely and resolutely” against the Russian invasion.
In his opinion, “they really outlined two positions”: the North American president with a “clear, strong pro-Ukrainian position” and the Brazilian president with “a position of readiness to negotiate, condemning the invasion, which he did today.” I don’t condemn it, but I have condemned it before, representing the rest of the world.”
“They are not incompatible, there is a dialogue between them. If you look closely, there is a coincidence. These are different positions, but there is an overlap that allows for dialogue,” he said.
When asked whether Lula da Silva was more pro-Russian than neutral, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied that the Brazilian president “carried out a very smart, personal, autonomous line” and that it “corresponds to the thinking of many countries.”
“And this position I think is well thought out, well presented and, to date, very well constructed in terms of discourse,” he added.
When asked about the Ukrainian president’s speech, he replied: “I think it was very good. It was very short, very strong. It raised fundamental questions.”
“When he finished, there was much more applause than when he started, so he achieved his goal,” he said.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that he spoke with Vladimir Zelensky about “adjusting the general initiative”, which he did not want to specify, “something more administrative” that has neither political nor military significance.
