The mayor of Porto stressed this Friday that the precautionary measure introduced by the owners of the Stop shopping center “does not solve the situation” and the decision whether to keep the space open or not is now legal.
“This circumstance does not resolve the situation, but only in some way postpones what is happening,” Porto Mayor Rui Moreira told reporters in a statement.
According to independent Rui Moreira, the municipality was notified by the court this morning that some owners had taken precautionary measures “to suspend the closure action” of the shopping center.
“The decision on closure, which in any case will not happen today, (…) for later, is suspended,” he said, adding that the municipality will now analyze the document.
“We don’t know if she’s against us. [município] or if you are against ANEPC [Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil] (…) We have to look at the precaution and understand whether there is something there that affects the decision of the House, or whether it is just a procedural issue,” he said.
The mayor also explained to journalists that, despite the fact that only some faction owners adopted the measure, the opinion of municipal legal services on it is final.
“One of two things: Either the whole mall can be open, or nothing can be open,” he said.
When asked whether Stop would be closed indefinitely, Rui Moreira stressed that “the time for justice is not the time for politics.”
“These are times that we have to respect,” he said, noting that firefighters will remain close to the building.
About fifty musicians and artists from Stop gathered today in front of Porto City Hall to express their dissatisfaction with the municipality’s decision to close this cultural space.
In letters to “Port.” Posters with some demands were placed in front of the town hall: “For work at the bus stop and the restoration of the Department of Culture” and “We all must stop.”
On September 8, the owners and tenants of the Stop shopping center were notified by Porto City Council services that they had up to 10 working days to vacate the building, which would end today.
On Thursday, the mayor of Porto announced that the municipality had failed to notify the management of the Stop shopping center condominium of its intention to close the premises, meaning the closure would be delayed by 10 working days.
The Stop, which has operated as a cultural space with rehearsal rooms and studios for more than 20 years, closed most of its sections on July 18, leaving nearly 500 artists and shop owners with nowhere to go, but reopened on July 4. with a fire truck at the door.
