Estimate predicts victory for PSD/CDS coalition in regional elections in Madeira

The coalition formed by the PSD and CDS-PP won the regional legislative elections in Madeira this Sunday with 43.13% of the vote. According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Interior, the PS was the second party with the most votes with 21.30%.

Thanks to these results, the PSD/SDS coalition received 23 mandates. The absolute majority lacked only one deputy, but it elected more than twice as many as the PS, which did not exceed 11.

Juntos Pelo Povo came third with 11.03%, winning a total of five mandates, ahead of Chegu with 8.88% and four deputies. The CDU, Liberal Initiative, PAN and Left Bloc scored less than 3%, but received one deputy each.

Abstentions amounted to 46.66%.

Arrival and debut of the “Liberal Initiative” in parliament

Chega and the Liberal Initiative will make their debut in the Madeira Legislative Assembly in the next legislature.

Chega ran for the first time in regional elections in 2019, gaining 619 votes (0.44%) without mandates.

The Liberal Initiative also ran for the first time in elections under the same law, gaining 762 votes (0.54%), also without mandates.

Bloc de Esquerda and PAN return to regional parliament

The left bloc will return to the Madeira parliament after four years of absence, having managed to elect the head of the list and the former leader of the regional structure of the party, Roberto Almado.

The PAN elected social worker Monica Freitas, who made her political debut at the invitation of the party leadership. This is the fourth time that PAN has participated in the regional legislative elections in Madeira. In the first elections he ran, in 2011, he won a mandate, but in the next elections he failed to achieve this goal.

Reactions:

António Costa (Prime Minister): “The Prime Minister congratulated the President of the Regional Government of Madeira on the election results achieved today and wished him continued good work for the benefit of the region and the country.”

Luis Montenegro (PSD President): “We are not going to govern the country or Madeira with Chega.”

Miguel Albuquerque (candidate from the PSD-SDS coalition): “Steps have already been taken. In the coming days we will present a government with a stable majority.”

Sergio Gonçalves (PS candidate): “In view of this result, I have to ask the question: Will Miguel Albuquerque resign or not? Will he keep his word at least once in his life and resign? well”.

Elvio Souza (PNP candidate): “Tomorrow the sunrise will be different. For the first time in Madeira, most parties were withdrawn. And for us, who helped remove this majority, this is a historical moment, this is a turning point. dot. page in the history of Madeira.”

Andre Ventura (President of Chega): “Chega is not available for any kind of understanding with Miguel Albuquerque.”

Miguel Castro (Cega candidate): “There are conditions on our part [para a coligação PSD/CDS-PP governar]I think there are governments that rule a minority and rule well.”

Rui Rocha (IL President): It is not because of IL that “Madeira will not have a solution to the problem of government stability in the near future.”

Nuno Morna (IL candidate): “Our coalition is with the Madeirans, and so it will be, but we also do not give up the role of the adults in the room. We do not refuse to communicate with anyone, and our doors will always be closed.” open to it”

Paulo Raimundo (Secretary General of the PCP): “The PSD and the SDS have suffered a clear defeat which, regardless of the institutional mechanisms that may be created to continue the catastrophic course of the region, cannot be avoided.”

Edgar Silva (CDU candidate): “Dr. Miguel Albuquerque is coming out of this election. He leaves politically without the slightest political authority, after what he said and after the trick he has now come up with to justify his perpetuation. in power”.

Mariana Mortagua (BE coordinator): “BE had two goals and achieved both, these are two good news: we returned to the regional parliament with the election of Roberto Almada and contributed to the end of the absolute majority of the PSD, which was to dismantle and determine the fate of Madeira.”

Roberto Almada (BE candidate): “The right will reorganize and form its own government, but they will have an opposition in BE that will be harsh and inflexible.”

Monica Freitas (PAN candidate): “All doors are open” for the post-election coalition.
