The general vote count for the Madeira elections will take place today in Funchal.

The General Counting Assembly to count the votes in Madeira’s legislative elections, which took place on Sunday, will take place on Tuesday from 9:00 to 17:00 at the São Lourenço Palace in Funchal.

According to official preliminary results from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the coalition formed by the PSD and SDS-PP won the regional legislative elections in Madeira on Sunday with 43.13% of the votes, but failed to obtain an absolute majority, electing 23 of 47 deputies.

The PS elected 11 deputies, the AKP five and Cega four, while the CDU (PCP/PEV), BE, PAN and IL each elected one deputy.

Chega and IL will make their debut in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, while PAN and BE will return to parliament.

Voted by PTP, JPP, BE, PS, Chega, RIR, MPT, ADN, PSD/CDS-PP (Somos Madeira coalition), PAN, Livre, CDU (PCP/PEV) and IL.

In this election, 135,413 of 253,865 registered voters voted, representing a participation rate of 53.34% (or an abstention rate of 46.66%).

On Sunday, after the results became known, the leader of the PSD/Madeira and president of the regional government since 2015, Miguel Albuquerque, assured that in the coming days he would be able to present a government with a parliamentary majority, but stressed that from this coalition “he comes.” .

After listening to Albuquerque’s statements, the representative of the Republic in Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, told Lusa that he would listen to the elected parties from Wednesday to Thursday.

Despite betting on the scenario mentioned by Miguel Albuquerque, Ireneu Barreto stressed that he cannot predict the outcome of the interviews with the parties, so only after the hearings will he be able to make a decision.

Four years ago, the Social Democrats elected 21 deputies, losing for the first time the absolute majority they had held since 1976, and formed a coalition government with the SDS-PP (three deputies). The PS received 19 mandates, the AKP – three and the CDU – one.
