Over the past two months, the PSP has identified 509 elderly people in situations of social risk, of whom 424 were immediately referred to social support institutions, the police said this Monday.
Elderly people at risk were identified by the Public Security Police during this year’s Operation Solidarity Has No Age, carried out from August 7 to September 28 in its area of responsibility – urban centers.
The PSP report states that as a result of the actions taken, 528 elderly people were identified, 509 of whom were in situations of social risk, and 424 of these elderly people were immediately sent to social support institutions.
According to the PSP, the majority of risk factors identified were related to lack of autonomy (109), a serious clinical condition requiring immediate medical attention (61), suspicion of being a victim of reoffending (60), because they lived in degrading conditions lifestyle (42), lack of network (39) and economic and financial insufficiency (11).
The PSP indicates that about 700 police officers took part in the operation this year, who carried out 4,028 individual preventive activities and 233 awareness-raising campaigns.
The police have carried out this preventive operation every year since 2012, the main purpose of which is to “intensify direct contact and dialogue with the elderly population”, the goal of which is to “identify cases of social instability, physical vulnerability and mental illness as early as possible.” and suspected crimes against physical integrity, as well as facilitating immediate and necessary support through a coordinated response with partner organizations.
The PSP also reports on the most common complaints filed by the elderly population, with a particular focus on property crimes (11,998 complaints), namely theft and fraud, especially computer and communications fraud, which has gradually increased in incidence over the past few years, and crimes against persons (5,179 reports), such as crimes against simple physical integrity, threats and coercion, and domestic violence.
