Heat warnings for Madeira and nine areas of the continent

An orange warning for heat in Madeira and Porto Santo was extended until Sunday, as well as a yellow warning in force for nine areas of the mainland and some islands in the Azores, in this case for rain.

In Madeira and Porto Santo, the persistence of very high maximum temperatures extended the orange warning until 2pm on Sunday, the second most severe on a scale of three, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

On the Azores islands of Santa Maria and Sao Miguel, IPMA extended the yellow warning, the least severe, until 00:00 Saturday due to rainfall that is sometimes heavy and may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

In six of mainland Portugal’s nine districts where a yellow warning is in effect due to the heat, the IPMA extended it until 9am on Sunday.

These are the areas of Setubal, Santarem, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra.

An orange warning is issued by the IPMA when there is a moderate to high risk meteorological situation, and a yellow warning is issued when there is a risk for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

This Friday, IPMA is forecasting a rise in maximum temperatures, which will be concentrated on the north and central coasts, and a slight rise in minimum temperatures.

Forecasts show that minimum temperatures will range from 12°C (Bragança and Braga) to 23°C (Portalegre), while maximum temperatures will range from 27°C (Guarda and Aveiro) to 37°C (Santarém).
