The Secretary General of the Socialist Party, António Costa, emphasized this Friday the “red line” for the far right, regarding which they “do not have the hesitations like other parties”, calling on the European Socialist Party (PES) to take action against the Slovak party. under the leadership of Robert Fico.
“As the leader of a political party that is part of a European party,” PES, “it is necessary to understand very clearly that if this party either remains in this family and does not make agreements with the far right, or makes agreements with the far right and leaves,” said Antonio Costa.
Speaking to reporters at the end of an informal European summit held in the Spanish city of Granada, the PS leader confirmed a letter sent on Thursday to PES President Stefan Löfven, the group in which the Portuguese Socialists are integrated.
“As you know, we have a very fundamental rule for the far right – the red line, and therefore we do not have the hesitation that other parties have whether they make agreements with Chega or not make agreements with Chega. – it is a longing that we do not have it and therefore cannot be part of the same political family with other socialist parties who may have doubts or desire to come to an understanding with political families that are completely incompatible with us.” – explained António Costa this Friday.
Days after Robert Fico won the Slovak legislative election, a candidate who has become known for more extreme positions such as opposing aid to Ukraine and who is considering forming coalitions with the far right, the PS secretary general stressed that “every country absolutely sovereign in the choice of its leaders.”
“I have no comment and I have to work with everyone, no matter who they are,” he stressed as prime minister.
“It’s a completely different matter” with political families, he said.
Slovakia’s legislative elections last Saturday confirmed the fragmentation of the domestic political scene, with seven parties represented in parliament and differing prospects for forming an inevitable coalition government.
Last Monday, Slovak President Zuzana Caputova tasked nationalist Robert Fico with forming a government following his party’s victory in Saturday’s legislative elections, even though she needed the support of other parties to return to the prime minister’s post.
The direction – the Social Democracy Party (SMER-SSD) of social democratic and nationalist origins, which during the campaign opposed the direction of additional military aid to Ukraine – received more than 23% of the votes in the legislative elections.
The Constitution does not set a fixed time limit for the formation of a government, but once its formation is announced, it must be put to a vote by Parliament within a maximum period of 30 days.
