Scene of chaos in Afghanistan after earthquakes: survivors pull bodies from the rubble with their bare hands

The earthquakes that rocked the western Afghan city of Herat are already among the deadliest to hit the country in 20 years. The disaster killed at least 2,400 people and injured two thousand.

The area where the earthquake was felt is densely populated, meaning many people remained underground after the tremors. Thousands of people remain missing and chaos is widespread. According to the Minister of Culture of Afghanistan, quoted by AP News, 1,320 houses were completely destroyed.

Based on some videos posted on social media, survivors support rescue efforts. With their own hands they are trying to extract bodies and wounded from the rubble.

One of the recordings shows how people free a girl from a collapsed building, buried up to her neck.

Organizations such as the Red Crescent, Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children have already sent humanitarian aid. International aid groups described the destruction as worse than expected, with villages completely destroyed.

Still according to AP News, Some reports coming from the villages of Zenda Yana report several bodies buried under collapsed houses and residents waiting for help. People from neighboring villages have already arrived at the site and brought equipment for work.

“Most people were shocked. Some couldn’t even speak. But there were others who couldn’t stop crying and screaming,” he said. Omid Hakju, a photographer who witnessed this situation.

Save the Children has called on the international community to “urgently commit” money to rebuild Herat.
