The Minister of Internal Affairs admits that there are problems only in appearance

The Minister of the Interior, José Luis Carneiro, this Monday denied the existence of “specific problems” with the new radars, saying that the failures were recorded on one radar.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (ANSR) confirmed this Monday the presence of “specific problems” in the new radars resulting from a technical failure and announced that the administrative records resulting from these cases are in the process of being archived.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a PNP campaign to raise awareness among the elderly population in Oliveira de Azemeis, Aveiro district, the minister denied that several radars had malfunctioned. “According to ANSR, this happened on the radar,” the minister clarified, adding that a technical investigation is underway.

The official also noted that in these cases, as well as taking into account the administrative offenses associated with the use of this radar, “naturally, citizens should be protected from what is a technical failure that was detected by ANSR.”

José Luis Carneiro also stressed that although between 1986 and 2019 the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads decreased by more than 80%, in 2022 more than 470 deaths were recorded.

According to the minister, these figures should outrage the population and justify the use of all tools available to the government to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads, such as speed control.

“Experience shows us that where radars are placed, the number of deaths and serious injuries is reduced by up to 70%. This means that this is a useful tool not for increasing income, but, in principle, for saving human lives,” he emphasized.

A statement published on the ANSR website said the test was carried out on all radars installed under conditions similar to new ones to “ensure maximum system safety and stability.”

No additional problems were identified in these situations, so “the radars operate in strict accordance with all legal regulations,” he adds.

Problems with some of the new radars were suspected when several drivers complained of some equipment malfunctioning earlier this month, particularly in the central region of the country. In one example, a truck was found traveling at almost 200 kilometers per hour and ended up being fined.
