The continent’s weather will be influenced by “successive frontal systems associated with troughs moving in the North Atlantic towards Europe” starting on Tuesday due to the influence of the Babet Depression, IPMA said this Monday.
According to a statement from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the weather on the Portuguese mainland “will be influenced by the approach and passage of successive frontal systems associated with depressions” that “carry in their circulation a mass of air with tropical characteristics emphasizing the high content of water vapor” .
On Tuesday, “the passage of a cold frontal surface associated with the Babet Depression (named by the UK Met Office) will bring rainfall, sometimes heavy and persistent, and winds from the southern quadrant with strong gusts along the coast and inland. high,” the note said, reminding IPMA that “weather warnings have already been issued for this episode.”
“A further episode of worsening weather conditions is expected on the 19th with rainfall, locally heavy and persistent, and winds from the southern quadrant, with strong gusts along the coast and in the highlands, which will result in further weather warnings being issued,” IPMA adds.
The institute predicts that by the end of the week, the amount of precipitation accumulated over five days, from this Monday to Friday inclusive, “should reach very significant values, and in most regions of the North and Center they will be able to exceed accumulated values of about 100 mm, and in some mountainous areas areas on the northern coast may even exceed 200 mm.”
Air temperatures “are trending downward, especially from the 19th,” and from Tuesday, “increasing sea disturbances along the coast of mainland Portugal and in maritime areas of national responsibility” are also expected, “which will become severe and, as such, cause warnings regarding disturbances at sea.”
Forecasts will be updated by 6pm on Tuesday, the IPMA said.
