Two young people, aged 16, were detained by the public security police on suspicion of crimes committed in the summer in the areas of Cascais and Estoril.
It is believed that the detainees are members of a youth gang involved in robberies in the above-mentioned areas. They are charged with attempted robbery, grievous bodily harm, theft, computer fraud and credit card abuse, PSP said in a statement.
“The investigation carried out by the PSP covered two separate investigations carried out by the Cascais Prosecutor’s Office in the Western District of Lisbon, both concerning crimes committed in the areas of Cascais and Estoril during the summer of this year,” can be read in a statement from the authority.
One investigation involved two skilled robberies using a sharp weapon in which two young men, aged 18 and 19, were robbed by a group of more than ten people.
A towel was placed over the head of one of the young men who refused to give up his belongings. He was then punched and stabbed four times. He suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack and was taken to Cascais Hospital in critical condition.
Another investigation concerns two robberies that targeted a foreign couple walking along Paredan do Estoril. They were attacked by six people who assaulted one of the spouses and stole several assets, including credit and debit cards, which were later used for several purchases.
The investigation made it possible to identify a minor group responsible for the crimes described, consisting of several young people, some of whom are not older than 16 years.
“During the searches, items were seized that directly connect the young people with the crimes under investigation, several 12 mm cartridges, as well as 97.94 individual doses of a product suspected of containing narcotic content (hashish),” the PSP reports.
Detainees were subjected to judicial questioning and weekly interrogations.
