The government has already sent to the Assembly of the Republic the question of creating a platform to combat corruption in sports. The announcement was made this Friday by the Minister of Justice at the ceremony of the 78th anniversary of the creation of the Judicial Police, which will put into operation the new body.
According to Catarina Sarmento e Castro, the platform “will appear in the context of a new legal regime to combat unsportsmanlike conduct.” “It will work under the direction of the Director of the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the SP and will be staffed by experts from the Office of the Prosecutor General,” among others. The goal will be “not only to provide training, but also to accelerate processes already in place, as well as those aimed at combating corruption in sport.” The minister also announced a legislative regime that will criminalize the unregistered ownership of high-speed boats “frequently used in road traffic”.
The national director of the SP, Luis Neves, emphasized the importance of the fight against corruption and said that the increase in the number of inspectors – in 2018 there were 750, today there are 1,200 – “is very much aimed at this fight.” “We hope to open [até final do ano] national computer forensics laboratory. Delays on them mean a delay in investigations, especially in the fight against corruption,” he said.
Luis Neves recalled that the PS “went through difficult times without registration.” He pointed to the “garrote” from former finance ministers Mario Centeno and Joao Lean.
