Court tries to remove Trump from election

A judge in Denver, Colorado, began hearing a lawsuit Monday that uses a rarely used section of the Constitution to try to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential election.

The lawsuit was filed by the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which states that people who engage in “insurrection or rebellion” cannot be elected or hold public office. This amendment was introduced after the American Civil War (1861–1865) to prevent former Confederate leaders from running for public office and has been rarely used since.

This is the first of several identical lawsuits filed against Trump in several states. If a Colorado judge upholds the complaint, Trump’s name could be removed from the ballot, but only in that state. However, the case is likely to reach the Supreme Court.
