The defendant, who was arrested last January and is under house arrest, is charged with qualified murder and desecration of a corpse.
The charge sheet from the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PP) states that the accused, as soon as she found out about her pregnancy, planned to kill the child and for this reason, she did not attend pregnancy counseling or purchase any items appropriate to her condition. pregnancy, any baby care items or children’s clothing.
The deputy also said that the woman hid her pregnancy from her boyfriend, relatives and colleagues by wearing loose clothing to hide her growing belly.
The crime occurred on July 25, 2022, when the defendant went into labor in the bathtub of her home after leaving her two minor children for dinner at her mother’s home.
According to investigators, the woman will give birth to a child 47.5 centimeters long and weighing 2.549 kilograms, which corresponds to a gestation period of more than 37 weeks.
“The child was born alive, without internal or external developmental defects, was breathing and crying,” says the deputy.
After the baby was born, the deputy said, the defendant cut the umbilical cord connecting her to the newborn, placed the baby in several plastic bags, which she threw in a trash container near her home, and went to work.
In the afternoon, the woman felt unwell and was taken to the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra and then to the Daniel de Matos Maternity Hospital, also in Coimbra, where she received medical and inpatient care.
According to the prosecution, while being transported to the hospital, the defendant told the firefighters who rescued her that she had experienced “abnormal blood loss due to the absence of her menstrual cycle,” without mentioning any childbirth.
According to investigators, the newborn remained alive in the trash container for at least four hours, inside closed plastic bags that did not allow the child to breathe.
The prosecution alleges that the child died of suffocation and was found dead on the same day at 18:30 by two employees of the kindergarten, who were alerted by the PSP about the presence of a newborn in the room. that trash container.
