The government will launch a new Portuguese host language program (PLA) in the first quarter of 2024, the Undersecretary for Parliamentary Affairs announced in response to MPs’ discussion of the state budget (OE2024).
Speaking at a joint hearing of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees and the Committee on Culture, Communications, Youth and Sports to discuss the OE2024 specialty, Ana Catarina Mendes said that the department is negotiating with other ministries to complete the program, which is one of the conditions inclusion of immigrants in Portugal.
Strengthening PLA teaching is one of the priorities of the new strategy of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), the minister recalled, believing that “there is no better way to include it than teaching Portuguese.”
In this sense, the minister explained that her ministry is discussing a new program with Camões and the ministries of Education and Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, so that in the “first quarter (2024) a new program” of the PLA will appear.
Responding to a question from BE MP Pedro Filipe Soares about the lack of vacancies throughout the country, Ana Catarina Mendes acknowledged the inability to meet existing demand.
PLA courses are intended for adults whose first language is not Portuguese and who do not have basic, intermediate or advanced language skills.
