Prime Minister António Costa canceled his planned visit to Porto, where he was due to preside over the opening of the Tomorrow Summit 2023 session late Tuesday morning, an official Cabinet source said. Ministers told Lusa Antonio Costa.
Hours earlier, the prime minister’s communications office confirmed to Lusa that the office of Vitor Escaria, the prime minister’s chief of staff, had been searched, adding that there had been no further comment from São Bento.
“We confirm that searches are taking place in the office of the head of the administration. [Vítor Escária]. We do not comment on legal actions,” a source working for António Costa told Lusa.
Also on Tuesday morning, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received the Prime Minister at the Belém Palace, at the request of António Costa.
According to the newspaper Público, PSP searches are taking place this morning in several ministries and in the official residence of the Prime Minister in São Bento.
The newspaper notes that Antonio Costa’s head of administration, Vitor Escaria, Costa’s close consultant Diogo Lacerda Machado and the mayor of Sines, socialist Nuno Mascarenhas, as well as two company executives have already been arrested.
Searches are currently underway and charges will be brought against Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro and Infrastructure Minister Joao Galamba, as well as former Environment Minister Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes.
The operation is related to an investigation into the lithium business in Montalegre.
