The health minister assured on Tuesday that talks with medical unions would continue, saying he had not yet given up hope of reaching an agreement on the day the prime minister announced his resignation.
“The government remains firmly committed to the possibility of mutual understanding,” Manuel Pizarro said in response to questions posed by deputies during the discussion of the specifics of the state budget for 2024 (OE2024), ahead of the next negotiating meeting with the Independent Union. doctors and with the National Federation of Doctors.
The Minister confirmed that he would not hold a debate on trade union negotiations in Parliament as he believed that this should be done between the Government and the trade unions, noting that “this does not naturally involve any disregard for the extremely important role of trade unions”. Manuel Pizarro insisted that the agreement with the group of professionals in general and with doctors in particular should be “based on a tripod.”
“Firstly, we must improve the Portuguese people’s access to healthcare, we must guarantee the ability to better organize the National Health Service, and thirdly, we must value professionals, in this case doctors, in terms of their working conditions. as well as the terms of their remuneration,” he explained.
The latest meeting between the Health Ministry and doctors’ unions ended without an agreement on Saturday, and talks will resume on Wednesday with a new oversight proposal that unions hope to see reflect the government’s approach.
The meeting comes at a time when Prime Minister António Costa asked the President of the Republic for his resignation, who accepted it, after the State Ministry reported that he was the subject of an independent investigation carried out by the Supreme Court regarding lithium and hydrogen projects.
The President of the Republic convened the parties for a round of hearings at the Belem Palace in Lisbon on Wednesday and will meet with the Council of State on Thursday.
