Judge’s car targeted by catalytic converter gang

The judge was one of the victims of a group involved in the theft of catalytic converters, which this Tuesday began to be tried in the court of Coimbra. The magistrate’s car was parked in Figueira da Foz, the city where most of the accused live, and the catalytic converter was stolen between 5.30pm on 27 January 2022 and 7am the next day. The judge was unable to use the vehicle for seven days and paid 583.59 euros for repairs. This resulted in the case being transferred to another court, but after the magistrate was transferred to the Court of Appeal, he returned to Coimbra.

The trial is now taking place under strict security measures. There are 37 defendants in the case, including three lawyers accused of acting in the interests of a criminal group from which they received money to accompany witnesses and other co-defendants. According to the indictment, the network operated in various parts of the country, committing thousands of crimes. Most illegal activities fall under 14 elements.
