Opposition to the right of the Social Democratic Party criticizes the nomination of Mario Centeno to replace Antonio Costa

The opposition on the right of the Social Democratic Party criticized this Friday the nomination of Mario Centeno to replace António Costa in the leadership of the new socialist government. do not dissolve parliament. However, as reported by the Jornal de Negócios, there was coordination between the two palaces around the figure of the current governor of the Bank of Portugal (BPO).

The prime minister did not do anything without Marcelo’s knowledge and the conversations that took place were always known to all participants, says the source quoted by Negócios, adding that the governor admitted that he had thought about this hypothesis.

Last night the Prime Minister expressed regret that the President of the Republic had opted for early elections instead of accepting his proposal to maintain the current parliamentary structure with a socialist majority and a government led by Mario Centeno.

For the PSD, “this is just another demonstration, but much more serious, of the lack of independence that the governor of the Bank of Portugal has,” accused parliamentary leader Miranda Sarmento this Friday.

In the same sense, Andre Ventura, president of Chega, considered that Costa’s proposal “shows that Mario Centeno was never an independent coach, he was always someone connected to the socialist machine.” The leader of the IL parliament, Rodrigo Saraiva, considered that such a hypothesis would be a “secretary decision.”

In response, the parliamentary leader of the PS, Eurico Brillante Díaz, noted that in their criticism the parties “reveal a bad conscience, in particular the PSD.” And he recalled the presentation of Carlos Costa’s book about his time as head of the banking regulator, in which he took a critical stance towards the socialists and, in particular, against Costa.
