Teachers and non-teaching workers begin this Monday a strike called by the Union of All Education Workers (Stop), which will last until the 29th, against the proposal of the state budget for 2024 (OE2024).
The union assessed the possibility of suspending the strike after the President of the Republic announced on Thursday the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic and the holding of early elections, but nevertheless decided to support the protest.
Stop criticizes the OE2024 proposal for the education sector, saying “it does not effectively invest in public schools or in the dignity of all those who work and study there.”
“We want to warn parents and society at large that if nothing is done, the next OE will deepen the degradation of public schools and the quality of education for our children, irreversibly jeopardizing their future,” said national coordinator André Pestana.
The last day of the strike coincides with the date of the final vote on OE2024 in the Assembly of the Republic. The aim is to put pressure on Parliament to ensure the document “really reflects the needs that state schools have and are not being reflected.”
In October, André Pestana explained that the decision to strike was taken by more than 100 strike committees and would be organized in each school and group, as in the previous school year, through strike funds.
In addition to the strike, a nationwide demonstration between the Ministry of Education and the Assembly of the Republic is also planned for November 18th.
