Costa “left the country in decline and seems to want to drag the rest with him”: Rui Rocha in an interview with CMTV

The leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, said this Thursday that the Socialist Party (PS) adopted a discourse of victimization after the operation of powerful men became public, a process that ended with the resignation of the Prime Minister and the decision to call for early elections.

In an interview with CMTVRui Rocha explains that there is no way to mitigate the situation of political instability created by the absolute majority of PSs.

“We have a prime minister who left the country in decline and seems to want to drag the rest of us down with him. Justice, the Council of State and the Presidency of the Republic. António Costa’s leadership has already caused a lot of harm to the country. “There is no need to continue to degrade institutions. It is necessary to restore trust in the Portuguese,” he said.

IL wants to be an alternative that brings economic growth to Portuguese people and companies.

According to Rui Rocha, Portugal needs an alternative that will provide economic growth for citizens and companies. He notes that IL has a clear program for the next elections and that it has managed to win the trust of the Portuguese.

He highlights tax cuts, access to healthcare and autonomy of choice as some of the issues the party will bring to the fore. “We have to leave more money in people’s pockets, we can’t send the wrong signal to the Portuguese (…) We need a country where people work and where success is valued,” he declares.

When it comes to healthcare, Rui Rocha says Portugal is “at the limit of what is acceptable” in terms of access. “We have one million six thousand people without a doctor and at least 30 departments, air-conditioned or even closed (…) This is unacceptable in Portugal in 2023,” he stressed.

According to the leader of the Liberal Initiative, negotiations between doctors and the government failed due to the presentation of “absurd” measures.

Liberal initiative calls for caution with the “charisma of Pedro Nuno Santos”

The lawyer rejected the idea of radicalism and warned of the need to protect the country from the left. He said IL has the ability to bring newness and different perspectives to the country. “We have to implement ideas that will attract more people,” he explains.

Asked about the possibility of creating a coalition with the PSD, Rui Rocha said that he “bears responsibility.”

“We are ready to give the country the stability it needs. It’s not worth staying the same,” he repeated.

Rui Rocha also took the opportunity to comment on the statement of Pedro Nuno Santos, who said that the PSD-IL alliance would be too radical a project.

“Radic is driving the Portuguese people into poverty, 3.2 billion euros wasted on TAP, approval of half a million euro compensation via WhatsApp. This is something we need to avoid as a country. We cannot fall into the radicalism that Pedro Nuno Santos represents. “They say that Pedro Nuno Santos is charismatic. Charisma was very expensive in Portugal. José Socrates also had charisma. It is much better to have confidence, competence, courage and growth,” he concluded.
