Pinto Moreira admits he removed the aftermath of Operation Whirlwind so as not to harm PSD

PSD MP Joaquim Pinto Moreira said this Wednesday that he does not feel politically humiliated, but assured that he will have political consequences depending on the “conditions” of a possible constitution as a defendant in Operation Whirlwind.

“In no case will I harm my party, or the chairman of my party, or the chairman of the parliamentary group, because these are people who are absolutely alien to this process,” he said, assuring that he had “an absolutely clear conscience.”

Speaking to reporters in the Assembly of the Republic, the former mayor of Espinho between 2009 and 2021, Pinto Moreira, said he had already spoken to SDP President Luis Montenegro, whom he had briefed on the consequences he would take if the process had worked out.

Asked repeatedly if he recognizes his resignation as Vice President of the PSD Bench and Chairman of the Constitutional Review Commission, Pinto Moreira has always referred to the “conditions” in which he may eventually be presented as an argument in this process.

To journalists, he repeated information he had already given in his statement on Tuesday, namely that the judicial police had searched his house and seized his professional computer and mobile phone, but no other documents.

“I am absolutely calm and do not feel any decrease in my ability and ability to develop my role as a deputy of the Assembly of the Republic,” he assured.

On the other hand, Pinto Moreira confirmed that he is “absolutely ready to cooperate with justice at the time and in the way that justice sees fit”.

“If a request is made to this Assembly for the waiver of parliamentary immunity, I will not invoke this immunity at all and will immediately agree to access to the process,” which he currently does not have, stating that he is not aware of any facts that he imputed.

When asked if Arguido’s constitution would result in him automatically resigning from his duties on the bench, Pinto Moreira did not answer.

“Being created arguido, depending on the conditions in which this composition of arguido is composed, I will learn the necessary lessons. Being sure that for me my basic principle is not to harm my party, of which I have been an activist for 40 years,” he confirmed, stating that both Luis Montenegro and Parliament leader Joaquim Miranda Sarmento know, “ what are the consequences” of his leaving “according to the facts attributed to him”.

Asked if he felt he could weaken the leadership of the SDP, he replied, “No, not at all.”

“Everyone knows about my long-term relationship with Luis Montenegro, we are from the same country, we have friendly relations, and even in the name of this friendship, I will know how to act accordingly,” he said.

Regarding the request to waive immunity, the MP said he had not yet been notified.

Around 12:00 noon, Lusa questioned the President of the Transparency Commission, socialist Alexandra Leitao, who said she had not yet received any inquiries about the matter.

The MP reiterated that he was not the “epicenter” of Operation Whirlwind, saying that there were detainees in the process and that their procedural situation was “different”, and expressed his conviction that on Thursday, at the end of the day, he would chair the first effective meeting of the Commission on revision of the Constitution.

Espinho Mayor Miguel Reis (PS), an employee of the latter, and three businessmen were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of active and passive corruption, evasion of duty and trading in influence in Operation Whirlwind, sources told Lusa. .

On Tuesday, the chief of staff of the Espinho Chamber, Nuno Cardoso, told Luza that “the investigation is mainly focused on the city’s operations carried out in the previous term,” a version disputed by Pinto Moreira, who led the municipality from 2009 to 2021.

“Without this information, but assuming that the investigation is being conducted in secrecy, I can say that the context of the investigation relates to 2022 and concerns unrealized investment intentions and urban development operations carried out under the current municipal mandate, even if some of them may transferred from previous mandates,” the PSD MP said.

Joaquim José Pinto Moreira was first elected as an MP in the 2022 legislative elections, becoming Vice President of the Social Democratic Bench under Joaquim Miranda Sarmento after Luis Montenegro took over as SDP President.
