Chegi President André Ventura said this Wednesday that the Portuguese will not miss Prime Minister António Costa and his government because they have failed “in all areas” and made “the country poorer.”
“The Portuguese will not miss us as prime minister and the Portuguese will not miss this government,” he said.
Speaking at the end of parliament’s debate on next year’s state budget, Andre Ventura accused the prime minister of leaving “the country poorer and without solutions”, with education “on its last legs” and “health care in chaos”.
“What budget do you imagine yourself with for the Portuguese in eight years? If you have failed in every area, if you have failed in every plan, in every goal, how can you say let’s do it differently in the future?” he asked, ending: “Mr Prime Minister, your your mother probably doesn’t even believe you.”
This comment caused cries across the hemisphere and prompted the intervention of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, who asked Ventura to “refrain from making statements that cannot but be classified as offensive and inappropriate in this Parliament.”
“This is a political debate, not personal commentary, especially involving people’s family members,” he added to applause.
The Chegi leader also criticized the “pre-election somersaults without memory” on the part of the PS regarding the failures to increase the single circulation tax and restrictions in the tobacco law.
“Generations don’t matter, elections matter. This is exactly what the PS has done for many years,” he said.
Recalling that this was “António Costa’s last public budget,” Andre Ventura noted that it “was presented to the Portuguese in the context of the greatest degradation of institutions in Portuguese memory.”
President Chegi stated that the Prime Minister resigned “in the midst of nepotism and a corruption scandal”, citing Operation Man of Influence, and stated that “what is ironic and curious about this story is that the PS ends up falling prey to an intolerable atmosphere cronyism, bargaining and promiscuity that she has been promoting for the past few years, and ultimately makes her government the first victim.”
In his speech, in which he quoted Adelino Amaro da Costa and Francisco Sá Carneiro, President Chegi noted that “for the PS this is a chaotic situation.”
“The country is suffering from this, but this is our opportunity, this is the opportunity the country has to eradicate poverty, corruption, low pensions, a backward country, socialism, which makes us the poorest every day,” he said. .
Andre Ventura emphasized that the right now bears “the responsibility to give the country an alternative government” and show that it “will be different”, that “it will not cut pensions or raise taxes.”
“Shame on those who, even with a majority in their hands, avoid the Portuguese or tell them they don’t want to be an alternative,” he said.
Speaking about pensions, President Chegi turned to the leader of the Liberal Initiative to emphasize that “there can be even ten PVRs, until the day there is not a single pensioner left earning less than 700 or 800 euros a month.”
And he reiterated that Chega wants to make an “extraordinary contribution to banking” because it is “not afraid of facing any vested interests.”
In this speech, President Chegi also criticized the election of a judge of the Constitutional Court, which deputies are holding this Wednesday, when the government is “about to leave.”
The state budget for 2024 will be adopted this Wednesday in a final global vote, the approval of which is guaranteed by an absolute majority of the PS.
