The PKP states that the absolute majority was a “guarantee of instability in the life of the people”

On Wednesday, the PKP said the vast majority of PSs “guaranteed instability in people’s lives” that exacerbated inequality, given that changes to the state budget “do not change it even a millimeter.”

At the end of the debate on the proposed state budget for 2024, PCP parliamentary leader Paula Santos noted that throughout the budget discussion, “there was no opportunity for the absolute majority of the PS to propose solutions.” improving living conditions of the population and expanding government services.

“The proposals approved by the PS do not change even a millimeter of the budget that was presented to the Assembly of the Republic,” he said.

Paula Santos cited as an example the fact that the PS did not agree to a salary increase of 15%, to a minimum of 150 euros, and also accused the Socialists of “not having the opportunity to improve teaching careers” or guarantee “working conditions.” for doctors, nurses and other health care workers.”

“For whom government has always had full access, in a position of subordination of political power to economic power, is the large employers and economic groups,” he charged.

The leader of the PKP believed that it was “politically significant” that the PS and the right-wing parties “defend the approval of a budget that will not improve the lives of workers and people, will not provide better public services or greater financial justice.” “.

“In essence, under various arrangements, the PKP proposals were rejected by the PS, alone or accompanied by the SDP, IL and Chegi together or in turn,” he said, accusing the socialists of moving closer to the right and “giving preference to capital.”

“The SDP is once again at the mercy of the budget debate, and the PS is doing what the SDP would like to do,” he said.

According to the parliamentary leader of the PKP, the legacy of the absolute majority of the PS is “more inequality and injustice, more difficulties in the lives of workers and people.”

Paula Santos argued that despite claims that “the country is a better place” and that “the economic performance is good”, it “doesn’t affect people’s lives”, adding that good bills “don’t put food on the table, they do ” do not guarantee counseling, do not provide teacher insurance, or prevent eviction.”

“After these two years, the absolute majority of the PS was not a guarantee of stability. It was rather a guarantee of instability in the life of the Portuguese people,” he criticized.

The parliamentary leader of the PKP said that “on the threshold of elections” the PS is approaching a period of “invention” rather than a period of absolute majority “to improve its governance”.

However, Paula Santos argued that “what mattered in the post-2015 period” was not the PS, but rather the “strength and decisive role of the PCP” in proposals such as free school textbooks, emergency pension increases or cuts in the cost of social security passes.

“It just didn’t go any further because the PS didn’t want to. Just like in 2021, she did not want to find solutions to real problems, wages and pensions, healthcare and housing. If the PKP Proposals had been approved at that time, this Wednesday the situation would be different, for the better,” he said.

The parliamentary leader of the PKP said that holding legislative elections “is an opportunity to break with this path of inequality and injustice” and build “an alternative politics.”

“It is in the hands of workers, pensioners, women and youth to join forces to make the dream come true,” he concluded.
