This Thursday, the Assembly of the Republic unanimously approved a vote of condolences for road traffic victims on the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, celebrated on November 19th.
The vote, presented by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, highlights that in Portugal “the number of accidents remains alarming, even though they show a downward trend in almost all main indicators compared to 2019,” the base year for monitoring. targets set by the European Commission and Portugal for 2030.
“Despite the evolution of roads, technology and driving rules, the scale of road accidents continues to raise questions among us,” the text says.
According to the latest available report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, regarding accidents recorded between January and June 2023, there were 17,121 accidents involving injuries, 238 fatalities, 1,226 serious injuries and 19,886 minor injuries in the mainland and autonomous regions.
Compared to the same period in 2019, there were 288 fewer accidents (-1.7%), 22 fewer fatalities (-8.5%), 65 more serious injuries (+5.6%) and 1070 fewer minor injuries (-5.1%).
“The Assembly of the Republic pays tribute to the victims of road traffic accidents, expresses its deep sorrow and solidarity with their families and friends and recognizes the contribution of the security forces, emergency teams and other health workers who are called upon every day to cope with this tragic situation. reality, as well as the appropriate role of civil society in raising awareness of accident prevention and supporting victims and their families,” the operative part of the vote states.
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was adopted on October 26, 2005 by the United Nations (UN) to honor those killed on the roads and is observed on the third Sunday in November.
