On Tuesday, PAN found that choosing Alcocete as the site for the new airport would be harmful from an environmental and quality of life perspective.
Speaking to reporters in parliament, PAN spokeswoman Ines de Souza Real said the independent technical committee (CTI) does not prioritize “environmental issues” or “the safety and quality of life of people.”
“First of all, because Alcochete’s decision raises serious concerns for us, both in terms of deforestation (about 250 thousand cork oak trees), and in terms of the cork oak trees that will have to be destroyed for construction, as well as the impact of noise on the environment. people’s quality of life,” he said.
PAN also stressed that the construction of the airport in Alcochete “undermines one of the largest public aquifers in the country”, calling for “broad participation” of the population in the public consultations that will now begin.
“PAN will participate, send its proposals and concerns, because we must defend not only environmental problems, but above all the quality of life of the people, both in the Lisbon metropolitan area, and the Portela problem has yet to be resolved in the short, medium term. term – either from Alcochete,” he said.
PAN also expressed concern that the findings on the location of the airport prepared by the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) and the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) had not been published.
“PAN will ask the government for the same conclusions because we cannot have again cases of lack of transparency like those we saw in the cases of hydrogen in Sines, in which the environmental assessment is actually compromised,” he said.
