The chairman of the Socialist Party, Carlos Cesar, this Thursday expressed his support for the candidacy of Pedro Nuno Santos for the post of secretary general of the party, believing that he is the one closest to the true interpretation of the political path of the outgoing party. leader António Costa.
This position regarding the direct internal elections of the Socialists on the 15th and 16th was expressed in a note that he published on his personal account on the social network Facebook, in which he also regretted that José Luis Carneiro “is besieged by the apologetic euphoria of most commentators and leaders of the Portuguese right.”
“I now publicly declare my support for Pedro Nuno Santos. I have not done this before because I understand that my functions as party president may conflict if I am asked to intervene in any preparatory procedure for these internal elections. I do this now because it is necessary. a duty of choice and clarity for all PS activists,” explains a member of the State Council.
Carlos Cesar then states that he has been an active member of the PS for 49 years and that most recently he, “among several others, was at the origins of António Costa’s first candidacy for the post of leader of the PS, in the negotiations that led to him becoming prime minister -minister.” and together on his journey to this day.”
“In fact, in this process, Pedro Nuno Santos was constantly active and influential, and therefore, among the three current candidates, it can be said that he is the one who was closest to the authentic interpretation of this path. led by António Costa,” states the former parliamentary leader of the PS (2015/2019). The Socialist president considers Pedro Nuno Santos “an original leader, not an appendage.”
“For this reason, because of what he showed and not because of what he hid, he has always been criticized and praised and will be chosen for who he is, not for who they want to appear . With him, we will be able to continue the best work done by the António Costa government, but in a healthy way, changing what needs to be changed and innovating what needs to be updated,” he asserts.
Regarding the current dispute over the leadership of the PS, Carlos Cesar understands that the former Minister of Infrastructure and Housing “talks least about his internal competitors and most about the country and its external opponents.”
“However, I am sorry that José Luis Carneiro is besieged by the apologetic euphoria of most commentators and leaders of the Portuguese right. I don’t think he wanted this, especially since none of these new flatterers will want him to become prime minister later,” points out. However, according to the former president of the regional government of the Azores between 1996 and 2012, Pedro Nuno Santos combines “the skills and maturity that his civic engagement and his public positions have provided him with his leadership and mobilization abilities in the PS “
“We need, as we all know, more resolve, determination and ability to get results in the country so that we don’t waste the time we have. We also need a party that does not hide from its place on the left, establishing itself as a dialogue, but a leading party,” he emphasizes, alluding critically to the strategic positioning of the candidacy of the current Minister of the Interior.
At this point, Carlos Cesar goes even further, writing that “the PS is opposed to the current PSD not because it is similar to it, but, on the contrary, because one and the other open the door to different paths that do not intersect in time and in the country, in which we live today, and in the democratic dimension that today is important to recreate and ensure.”
“The SDP we have is one of the worst and most cynical SDP we have ever had. Thus, the PS cannot dissolve into the center or compromise with the right, nor become entangled with the left, failing the history of its ideological commitments. ethical and international obligations that, despite everything, have always been respected in the experience of government that we undertook in the legislature that began work in 2015. Pedro Nuno is the one who offers the best guarantees in these aspects,” he adds.
