The Order of Architects welcomed in a statement this Thursday the presidential veto of changes to its charter because they are “harmful to the public interest.”
According to the president of the Order of Architects, Avelino Oliveira, mentioned in the statement, the revision of the statute “will open the door to actions by architects that will be carried out by those who are not registered in this Order,” leading to “the deregulation of the profession without any possibility of disciplinary action.”
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Thursday justified his veto of changes to the statutes of the Order of Architects with the argument that the publication of the diploma, approved in October by the majority of the PS in Parliament, “would lead to harm to the public interest and even have consequences contrary to those provided for by this reform.”
For the head of state, the wording of the decree leaves “doubts as to whether profession-specific actions (development and evaluation of projects, studies and architectural plans) can be carried out by people who do not have prior professional training and are not subject to the disciplinary jurisdiction of the Order of Architects.
The Order of Architects said in a statement that it “can help strengthen the statute” and that architects “perform an important social function – that of those who plan and define the area.”
