Pro-Palestinian activists painted the Zara store on Santa Catarina Street in Porto red this Wednesday.
In a statement, protesters “in solidarity with the Palestine Liberation Collective” expressed their “opposition to the brand’s new campaign” accused of re-creating shrouded corpses in the Gaza Strip.
On Tuesday, Zara expressed regret over the “misunderstanding,” but the Palestine Liberation Collective refuted that argument. “This campaign is not a misunderstanding, much less an isolated accident. It is rather the result of years of Zionist statements and actions that undermine justice and self-determination for the Palestinian people,” the group said.
In Montreal, Canada, other pro-Palestinian activists painted the windows of Zara stores, as well as in Tunis, Tunisia. The brand’s statement explains that the campaign, featuring statues wrapped in white fabric, is intended to “showcase handcrafted clothing in an artistic context.”
On Monday, Zara removed the campaign from its website and app following calls for a boycott from pro-Palestinian activists.
