António Costa voted this Friday in direct elections to elect the new general secretary of the Socialist Party and has not commented on his future in the party. That decision rests with the future Socialist leader, who the still-prime minister says the minister has “the freedom to do.”
“I have no doubt about one thing: politics is my job. At least until March 28, I will hold this post, and what happens then is not up to me,” he said.
The Prime Minister will meet his next successor on Sunday at 12 noon in Largo do Rato. Pedro Nuno Santos, Jose Luis Carneiro and Daniel Adrian are competing for the leadership.
António Costa praised the three candidates, saying that two of the three “have a lot of political experience and give a lot of confidence to the Portuguese, so whoever wins will be in good hands.”
“It is important that there is mobilization,” he also emphasized.
“The important thing is that what will happen is that the PS will address the Portuguese what has been done wrong, correct and reinvent what needs to be reinvented.”
When asked if he is thinking about retiring, António Costa replies that “no citizen invests his pension in politics, because being a political citizen does not mean performing political functions.”
The Secretary General added that “the page has been turned” and that he did what “his conscience dictated,” while recalling that it is extremely important that no doubt remains about him.
