The tanker Swan Atlantic was attacked this Monday while sailing in the Red Sea, the Norwegian company that owned it, Inventor Chemical Tankers, said after the Royal Navy warned of two new incidents near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
“The ship collided with some object. We contacted all the people who needed to be contacted. So far we have no information or photographs about the damage,” CEO Øystein Elgan told the Norwegian portal E24.
“There are no casualties on board,” he said, adding that there were 22 crew members and three guards on board the tanker.
Egan also confirmed that the US Navy ship USS Carney responded to the Swan Atlantic distress call.
The Norwegian Shipping Association has called on Norwegian and international authorities to find a solution to ensure the safety of civilian ships in the Red Sea.
“Today’s attack once again underscores the seriousness of the situation,” said Harald Solberg, as quoted by E24.
“The attacks are taking place on one of the most important civilian navigation arteries in the world,” he added.
Last Friday, shipping groups Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announced a temporary suspension of passage through the Suez Canal and Red Sea after several ships were attacked off the coast of Yemen in recent days.
Other business groups followed suit and joined the temporary suspension with no specified date for the resumption of shipping through the Suez Canal and Red Sea.
Over the past two months, Yemen’s Houthi forces have carried out several missile and drone attacks on southern Israel, as well as on Israeli-flagged or Israeli-owned ships in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
