According to the Azores Center for Seismovolcanic Information and Observation (CIVISA), two earthquakes measuring 3.0 and 2.1 on the Richter scale were felt on Tuesday on the island of Terceira at around 17:00 local time (18:00 Lisbon time).
According to CIVISA, at 17:06 local time, an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale was recorded three kilometers from the parish of Serreta, in the municipality of Angra do Heroismo.
The shock was felt with maximum intensity IV on the modified Mercalli scale in the parishes of Serreta, Dose Ribeiras, Santa Barbara, Cinco Ribeiras, Raminho and Altares (municipality of Angra do Heroismo).
Also, according to CIVISA, the event continued to be felt at intensity III in the parishes of São Bartolomeu, Posto Santo, Conceiço and São Pedro (municipality of Angra do Heroísmo) and in the parish of Biscoitos (municipality of Praia da Vitória) .
Earlier, at 17:00 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 2.1 on the Richter scale was already recorded, also with an epicenter three kilometers from Serreta.
The shock was felt with maximum intensity of grade III on the modified Mercalli scale in the parish of Doze Ribeiras in the municipality of Angra do Heroismo.
Both earthquakes are part of the ongoing seismic-volcanic crisis on the island of Terceira since June 2022, CIVISA points out.
On the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified by magnitude into micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9). ), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when higher 10).
The Modified Mercalli Scale measures “degree of intensity and corresponding description.”
At intensity III, considered weak, the shock is felt inside the house and hanging objects sway, feeling “vibrations similar to those caused by the passage of heavy vehicles,” the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said on its website.
At intensity IV, considered moderate, parked cars shake, windows, doors, and utensils shake, “glasses and utensils rattle or clank,” and walls or woodwork may creak.
