Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi this Thursday congratulated his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on his re-election in the Arab country’s presidential elections, according to an official note.
“Your Excellency’s resounding victory in these elections is a testament to the trust that the Egyptian people have in your wise and visionary leadership, which has repositioned Egypt as a country providing prosperity and stability to its people, and as a significant player on the international stage in regional and global issues.” , says Filipe Nyusi in a note distributed by the President of Mozambique.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was re-elected to a third term with 89.6% of the vote, according to an announcement Monday by Egypt’s National Elections Commission.
“After this convincing victory, I would like to express our warm congratulations on behalf of the people, the government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself,” added Filipe Nyusi.
Former Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the former military commander who overthrew Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, has led the country since 2014 and has faced criticism from Western countries over his country’s human rights record and crackdown on political dissent.
Re-elected in 2018 to a second four-year term, Egypt’s president won approval for constitutional amendments in 2019 in a referendum that added two more years to his second term, allowing him to run for a third six-year term.
Since he led the military coup on July 3, 2013, thousands of government critics have been silenced or arrested, mostly Islamists, but also many prominent secular activists, including some of those behind the 2011 uprising, in which resulted in the overthrow of then-president Hosni Mubarak.
