Cape Verde’s finance ministry will review the country’s presidential administration following controversy over the first lady’s salary and benefits, it was announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Cape Verdean government said that the Minister of Finance and Business Development, Olavo Correia, in his capacity as leader, had assigned the President of the Republic to carry out an audit, focusing on the items “personnel costs.”
According to the same source, the action will cover the period between November 9, 2021, the date of the inauguration of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, and the current date, “with the aim of clarifying the legality and correctness of the expenditure with the people.”
“According to these conditions, in the coming days a team from the Inspectorate General of Finance (IGF) will be with the President of the Republic to carry out the same,” said a note from the government, backed by the Movement for Democracy (MDD).
The audit comes after a dispute erupted in the country over the alleged salary of first lady Deborah Carvalho of 300 thousand escudos (2,720 euros).
The President of Cape Verde has already requested the position of the Court of Auditors and the General Financial Inspectorate on this issue, especially on issues of legality, and announced that his partner’s benefits will be suspended.
José Maria Neves, former prime minister and elected with the support of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, currently in opposition), also stated that if it is clear that there will be some amount for replacement, “it will be done immediately.” “.
