The President of the Liberal Initiative said this Thursday that PS Secretary General and former Minister of Infrastructure Pedro Nuno Santos “cannot be excluded” from the explanations regarding the purchase of CTT shares by Parpública.
“Pedro Nuno Santos really needs to come and clarify what is going on with this participation in the CTT, because either he did not know, he was left out and there is a trust issue, or he knew and is trying to deceive the Portuguese, that is the problem. question,” said Rui Rocha, speaking to reporters in Sintra.
The President of IL was at the train station in the parish of Agualva Casem this Thursday morning, the second day of the strike of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) workers, which has already led to the suppression of several trains.
Rocha stated that “what is at stake is not the legality” of the acquisition of Parpública shares, but rather “the reason for this purchase.”
“And then there is the question of the secrecy surrounding all of this: which leads us to believe that in fact this was a decision that was not so rational from a management point of view, but rather a decision of political interference on the part of the Public. management,” he said.
According to Rui Rocha, the Socialist General Secretary “cannot remain aloof from this clarification.”
“Because one of two things: either Antonio Costa did not inform him of the decision to buy a stake in CTT, which could reach, as we now know, 13%, and if he was not informed, then we must ask why. António Costa Didn’t you trust the minister responsible for the CTT? If I told you yesterday’s statements [quarta-feira] Pedro Nuno Santos is very serious because he tried to absolve himself of any responsibility and shifted it to third parties,” he said.
The journal Jornal Económico reported on Wednesday that the previous government, without disclosing it, instructed Parpública to buy CTT shares on the orders of then-Finance Minister João Leão.
In Parliament, PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos denied that he had given instructions to the Ministry of Finance or Parpública to purchase CTT shares while he was Minister of Infrastructure, and sent clarifications on this matter to the government.
In its statement, Parpublique asserts that “the purchase of shares of CTT, carried out before October 2021, took place in accordance with legal requirements,” saying that this was done on the orders of the then Minister of Finance João Leão and with the prior opinion of UTAM – Technical Unit for Monitoring and monitoring of the public business sector.
Parpública said it owns “355,126 shares of CTT acquired on the stock exchange in 2021, corresponding to 0.24% of the company’s capital.”
However, the UTAM document provided by Parpública mentions that on February 18, 2021, the Office of the Minister of Finance requested an opinion regarding the transaction to acquire Parpública “qualified participation of up to 13% in CTT — Correios de Portugal.”
The STTs were privatized between 2013 and 2014 by the PSD/CDS-PP government during the period of external financial assistance from Portugal.
