Pedro Nuno Santos wants financial stability and the priority of the economy and the social state

In Sunday’s speech at the closing of the congress, the PS Secretary General will outline his priorities in the field of modernizing the economy and strengthening the welfare state, protecting the stability of the financial system.

“I will present measures that will allow us to visualize our priorities: economic transformation and protecting the welfare state. to be reliable,” Pedro Nuno Santos said in an interview with TVI.

Answering a question about the tax burden in Portugal, the Socialist leader noted the importance of the stability of the tax system.

If the PS forms government again, “we will not make major changes from a financial point of view. We made an attempt to cut the IRS in the 2024 budget, which I defend, but we need stability,” he said.

Asked whether he intends to leave Lucilia Gago when his term as prosecutor general of the republic ends, he replied: “We are very far from that.”

“I don’t want to judge the work of the prosecutor’s office. A politician must respect the independence of the judiciary. The separation of judicial and political powers is important to the quality of our democracy,” he said.

When asked about the reason why he did not criticize the actions of the President of the Republic, unlike other socialist leaders, he stated that he had always had a “good relationship” with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, emphasizing, on the other hand, the importance of “existing” good institutional relations.”

It had already been agreed that when Prime Minister António Costa defended that the President of the Republic should have appointed another head of government proposed by the parliamentary majority of the PS, rather than dissolving the Assembly of the Republic by calling early elections, the Secretary General limited himself to agreeing with the proposal that the previous leader his party was introduced by Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

“But this is an outdated issue. Elections have been scheduled,” he said, before criticizing the scenario of a third dissolution of parliament by the president of the republic after the March 1 elections.

“We are not promoting democracy well if we talk about dissolution when the new parliament has not even been formed,” he warned.
