The PCP and BE this Sunday considered that the PS congress marked the “line of succession” between the new socialist leadership and the absolute majority government, calling for a break in policy.
Speaking to journalists at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), where the 24th National Congress of the PS took place, Ricardo Costa of the Political Committee of the PCP Central Committee said that the main meeting of the Socialists and the speech of its General Secretary marked the “line of continuity” of the policies of the last two years.
According to the PKP, this policy “does not solve the country’s problems” and “a political alternative is needed that addresses the issue of wages, raising pensions, combating the rising cost of living, housing issues and protecting the SNA.”
“We don’t see that here, we see a line of succession that will not respond to problems. We saw someone speaking as if he had just come to power,” he criticized.
Asked about Pedro Nuno Santos’ proposal to raise the minimum wage by at least €1,000 by the end of 2028, Ricardo Costa stressed that the increase was a “priority issue” but that it had to happen now, not just in 2028.
BE leader Luis Fazenda also believes that the Socialist Congress emphasized the “continuity of the legacy of the absolute majority government”, which he said was “very negative” in areas such as health, education or housing.
Luis Fazenda also criticized the proposal to raise the minimum wage to 1,000 euros, considering it “very small” and corresponding to “lower growth rates than this year.”
“We need policies that break with the legacy of the previous government. (…) There is a huge space for this gap and for a new politics of the left,” he said.
Livre leader Isabel Mendes Lopez said that in his speech Pedro Nuno Santos spoke of “the need for Portugal to reinvent its economy”, stressing that her party agrees, but this will only be possible with “a leftist majority, broad in the plural, who together working on a vision for the country.”
“In these elections, Livret defends the need to achieve three goals: that the majority be left, that Livret be part of this left majority with the parliamentary group, and that extremists stay away from power,” he stressed.
