The leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL) this Friday said that government intervention in the media is harmful because it takes away their freedom, and that it is desirable that regulation works and profitability models are found.
Asked about the crisis facing the Global Media Group (GMG), the IL president said government intervention in the media was “undesirable” for the party, stressing that this was a “clear position”.
“Government interference in the activities of the media is harmful because it takes away their freedom. It is desirable that the regulation works and that it is possible to find models of profitability in the operation of the media business,” Rui Rocha emphasized during his speech. in Vila Real, on the sidelines of a meeting with young people.
The IL leader began with words of “full solidarity” with the workers of these groups who are now in a difficult situation.”
“I understand that what media organizations actually need to do is find a profitable business model, and that is a challenge that media organizations themselves face as well as regulation doing its part,” he defended.
And he continued: “When we witness certain transactions that do not seem entirely clear, we have to say that regulation may have failed and that regulation needs to play a more decisive role in overseeing and monitoring these types of transactions.”
On December 6, in an internal statement, the executive committee of GMG, which owns publications such as JN, O Jogo, Diário de Notícias, TSF and others, announced that it would urgently negotiate layoffs with 150–200 workers and continue with the restructuring that, according to him, it was necessary to avoid “the more than predictable bankruptcy of the group.”
On Wednesday, GMG workers staged a daylong strike against the proposed dismissal and non-payment of wages.
Rui Rocha started the day at the zero kilometer of the National Bandstand 2 (EN2) in Chaves and took part in the conference of the Youth Academy in Vila Real, an initiative that challenges the civic participation of young people from the interior.
