Rui Moreira sends a new letter complaining about delays in the Porto metro

Porto Mayor Rui Moreira has written to Metro do Porto for the third time in just over a year to complain about work in the city, saying the transport company’s plans “cannot be trusted”.

“It will be impossible to trust the work plan presented by Metro do Porto, whose unpredictability is constant,” said the letter that the independent mayor sent on January 4 to Metro do Porto president Thiago Braga. which Lusa had access to this Monday.

According to Rui Moreira, “nothing that was planned and presented (…) is carried out” by Metro do Porto, with “changes to what was previously planned, which further worsens mobility conditions and limits the normal functioning of the city” .

In the letter, Rui Moreira specifically refers to the works of the future line Rosa (São Bento – Casa da Música) and the “metrobus” (Casa da Música – Praça do Império).

This time the President of the Municipality pays special attention to Avenida do Maréchal Gomes da Costa, where, according to the mayor, “a small intervention was initially planned”, but “the project was changed and (…) it became necessary to build a sidewalk box one deep meter in relation to the level of the public road, which led to a delay of two months.”

“All trust in the presented schedules, the proposed constructive solutions, as well as in the promises to deliver public spaces within the presented time frame will inevitably be lost,” says Rui Moreira.

According to the mayor, “nothing is going according to plan, so the impact on people’s lives and the city’s economy is becoming unbearable,” and also seeks “more effective signage and more complete and detailed information” about the work being carried out.

In a letter dated January 4, to which Lusa had access this Monday, after it became known that Metro do Porto would not close the Campo Alegre tunnel during work on the Rubi line (Casa da Música – Santo Ovidio), removing pedestrian access to The future station in the area, Rui Moreira, has introduced a new delay schedule.

According to the services of the Municipality of Porto, on the Rosa line at Rio da Vila Gallery the delay is 621 days, at Praça da Galiza station the delay is 244 days, at Hospital Santo Antonio station the delay is 92 days, at Casa da Música the delay is 434 days, the emergency well of Largo Ferreira Lapa – 190 days, and the well of Miguel Bombard – 488 days.

Regarding the Metrobus, Rui Moreira reported to Tiago Braga 162 days of delay between Domínguez Álvarez and Bessa Leite streets, 207 days between Agramonte and João de Deus streets, 140 days between Pedro Espano and Azevedo Coutinho, 177 days between São João de Brito and Pinheiro Manço, as well as 66 days between the intersection of Boavista and Marshal Gomes da Costa avenues and João de Barros street.

This is the third time in a year that Rui Moreira has used this letter as a means of complaining about the work of Metro do Porto.

Last November, Porto City Council already blamed Metro do Porto for delaying work on the Rosa line, originally scheduled for later this year, until 2025.

In a letter sent in November 2022 to the president of the board of directors of Metro do Porto, Rui Moreira had already expressed concern about the “deeply negative impact of the new metro line project”, which he then claimed represented “excessive delays” “on almost all fronts” “

Lusa has contacted Metro do Porto for a response and is awaiting a response.
