The mayor of Santa Maria da Feira suspends the authority to head the PSD list for Aveiro

The mayor of Santa Maria da Feira will suspend her powers on January 29 to lead the Aveiro district’s list for the PSD in the legislative elections, handing over the succession of the municipality to Amadeu Albergaria.

In the middle of his third and final term as mayor, after three successively strengthened absolute majorities, Emidio Sousa will suspend his duties on the day the PSD list is submitted to the court, as required by law, but he proposes to renew his mandate in the chamber immediately after the elections and will finally leave his post only when he takes office in the Assembly of the Republic.

His election to this body is more than likely, given that the 63-year-old state manager is number one on the list drawn up for Aveiro by the Democratic Alliance coalition (PSD/CDU-PP), of which he agreed to be part. to the “extremely difficult situation the country is going through.”

Emidio Souza suggests that his expectations were mainly related to the European Parliament, so the list with which he stood in the 2021 municipal elections already had a “particularly competent” number 2 who could replace him in the chamber if necessary, but states that the Option of the Assembly of the Republic turned out to be “a matter of force majeure.”

Speaking to Agência Lusa, the candidate explains: “The situation has changed a lot and there has been a call from the party to bring together experienced, proven candidates to take the PS out of government. I agreed to run because the country needs this renewal. and also because in Parliament I will have the opportunity to be more actively involved in projects that are crucial for the municipality of Feira and the region of Aveiro.”

Among them, Emidio Souza includes the construction of the announced Cruz Tunnel next to the Feira interchange on the A1 motorway and the creation of a train station next to the Europarc Congress Center to connect to high-speed TGV trains. The expansion of the San Sebastian hospital and the construction of a new court in Feira are other projects the candidate wants to accelerate in Lisbon, in parallel with demands for a more effective strategy to combat coastal erosion in the district.

As for the city council, he ensures that it is “well organized, in an excellent financial position and has projects identified for the next 10 years.”

Amadeu Albergaria, who ranks second in the executive branch and has already taken up the post of vice-president of the municipality since taking office in 2021, states that the current council “has complete control over the entire dossier of the municipality and will continue to effectively implement the program voted for by the majority of Feira residents “

This 47-year-old lawyer actually claims that “the development project implemented in Santa Maria da Feira is the result of the work of a team very well led by Emidio Sousa”, and in this sense he understands the early departure of the still-incumbent president.

“Unexpected political circumstances in the country led to the fact that he was invited to head the list of deputies from Aveiro, and this is recognition of his merits,” says Amadeu Albergaria, emphasizing that in the parliament Emidio Sousa will be able to “continue to work with the people of Feira, while with the national responsibilities and competence.”

In the 2022 legislative elections, the PSD elected seven deputies from the Aveiro district, representing one more parliamentarian than in the 2019 elections.

In this year’s election race, Emidio Sousa is the first candidate of the PSD/SDS coalition, followed in order by Silverio Regalado, Angela Almeida, Salvador Malheiro, Almiro Moreira, Paula Cardoso, Paulo Cavaleiro, Miguel Santos and Carolina Márquez.

Candidate number 10 will be from SDS-PP, but his name has not yet been disclosed.
