Socialist leader Daniel Adriano, who ran with Jose Luis Carneiro for the post of PS leader against current Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos, left the list of parliamentary candidates in Coimbra on Tuesday.
On Monday evening, the Political Commission of the Federation PS of Coimbra approved the list of parliamentary candidates in which Daniel Adrian took fifth place, behind the head of the list, Minister Ana Abrunosa, from the former leader of the federation Pedro Coimbra, drawn up by Ricardo Lino. (Coimbra) and Raquel Ferreira (Figueira da Foz).
At the time, a source in the PS leadership told Lusa that the presence of Daniel Adrian among the potentially eligible seats in the March 10 legislative elections was a “sign of unity” following the recent internal dispute between Pedro Nuno Santos and Jose Luis Carneiro and Daniel Adrian will succeed António Costo in the post General Secretary.
Late on Tuesday, according to socialist sources, during a meeting of the PS National Secretariat that preceded the meeting of the Political Commission, which is still ongoing, the name of Daniel Adrian was disputed by members of the leadership led by Pedro Nuno Saints.
A PS leadership source told Lusa that Daniel Adrian was offered the sixth seat in Coimbra as an alternative, but the socialist leader refused.
Daniel Adrian: “The facts speak for themselves”
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, Daniel Adrian states that he accepted the invitation of the Secretary General of the PS “to take fifth place on the list of Coimbra as an extreme position, in good faith and in a spirit of commitment, for the sake of the unity of the broken.”
“The list has been approved [segunda-feira] at a meeting of the Coimbra District Political Commission, where my name was in fifth place. I am today [terça-feira] unexpectedly encountered during a meeting of the Political Commission the decision that the National Secretariat had decided to appoint another person to this position. The facts speak for themselves,” he wrote.
Daniel Adrian received one percent of the votes in the recent direct elections for the position of PS general secretary. In 2016, 2018 and 2021, he also ran for the leadership of this party against Antonio Costa.
