The Ministry of State (MP) and the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the Judicial Police (UNCC/PJ) are conducting a major judicial operation in Madeira and on the mainland. ABOUT CM You know that there are three detainees, two of whom are Pedro Calado, President of the Funchal City Council, and Avelino Fariña, President of the AFA company.
The searches are primarily aimed at the regional government of Madeira and the PSD president himself, Miguel Albuquerque. This operation also targets the Funchal council, led by Social Democrat Pedro Calado.
According to the statement of the joint venture, the investigation concerns “crimes of active and passive corruption, economic participation in business, malfeasance, improper receipt or offering of advantages, abuse of power and influence peddling.”
The president of the regional government of Madeira is suspected of corruption, economic involvement in business and malfeasance, as well as possible violation of community rules in the field of public procurement.
ABOUT CM You also know that the regional secretary is being asked to have his parliamentary immunity lifted so that he can be detained and appropriate coercive measures taken.
The searches began early on Wednesday morning and involved about 270 inspectors and investigators almost throughout the country. In addition to Madeira, searches took place in Lisbon, Braga, Guarda, Coimbra, in a total of 130 homes and non-residents. house searches, PJ reported. The operation involved two criminal judges, six magistrates of the MP of the Main Directorate of Investigations and Criminal Cases and six employees of the Technical Advisory Center of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The operation combines at least three investigations that began in the Funchal parliament but were moved to Lisbon some time ago.
These investigations look into the private businesses of Miguel Albuquerque, other members of the government and the local authorities of Madeira, in particular the Funchal council, headed by Albuquerque’s political dauphin Pedro Calado. Both are from PSD.
One of the investigations was opened in 2019 in Funchal. At issue is a possible link between Miguel Albuquerque’s private real estate business and the direct transfer of the Madeira Free Trade Zone concession to the Pestana group, which is also the target of searches as part of this operation.
Also under investigation are dozens of direct adjustments and public works grants, some of which were paid for but never completed.
