Marcelo reacts to the political crisis: “The President has no constitutional authority over Madeira”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, commented on the political crisis that arose in Madeira after the start of the mega-operation of the judicial police in the region.

“The President of the Republic does not have constitutional authority over Madeira,” he explained.

Asked about the possibility of postponing the elections or choosing a new representative, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he would not “anticipate developments.” “This is a reality that exists. I cannot build scenarios that go beyond reality,” he added.

The President also stated that “the functioning of judicial institutions is a good sign for democracy. And this is good for politics too. It is part of the rules of the game so that every citizen knows that he is not above the law,” reinforcing that the situation represents an example of the trust of the Portuguese people in institutions.
